Publicans call time on Good Friday ban – again!
New campaign launched with aim of amending law in time for Good Friday 2017
“It’s as if ministers are living in Never-never land”
Publicans all over the country are calling on the Government to amend the licensing laws to permit all licensed premises to trade normally on Good Friday. The two main representative groups, the Licensed Vintners Association (Dublin publicans) and the Vintners Federation of Ireland (Outside Dublin) described the current law which prohibits the sale of alcohol on Good Friday as archaic and discriminatory.

LVA welcome progress on Good Friday Licensing Legislation

The Licensed Vintners Association (LVA), which is the trade association and representative body for the publicans of Dublin, has welcomed the amendment to the licensing legislation to permit Good Friday trading which has passed through the Senate today. The Association hope that this is the first step in ensuring that 2018 will be the year in which the 90 year old ban on serving alcohol on Good Friday is finally lifted.

The Association acknowledges the support of Senator Billy Lawless in particular and also Senators Michael McDowell, Gerard Craughwell and Victor Boyhan in supporting the Bill.

Speaking about the development, LVA CEO Donall O’Keeffe said “We are pleased by the progress made in the Senate to finally put an end to this archaic ban on pubs serving alcohol on Good Friday. We see this as a very positive development and sincerely hope that it will be swiftly passed by the Dáil after the summer recess. We want to make sure that pubs, like all other commercial enterprises, are open for business on Good Friday 2018.”
